Why All The Pine Trees?

Writer: Rachael DowlingRachael Dowling

Despite what you might think, WCFF is not obsessed with pine trees. But pine trees do hold a historical significance - and why we chose to use them in the WCFF logo.

The Eastern White Pine tree could be seen all along the coast of America in the 1700's. But these tall, beautiful tree trunks made for great masts on the English military and commercial ships.

Unfortunately, The King's "Broad Arrow" act allowed these massive trees to be harvested - with no limits. The colonists resented the King's disregard for their livelihood - as they relied on heavily on these trees for building their homes and heat.

The people pleaded to the King and government. But no solution was found, and these beautiful trees continued to be chopped down. It was at this time, John Locke wrote an essay titled: Two Treaties of Government. While this essay was written in 1690, it was heavily relied upon during the 1760's while people were seeking relief from the government. Once the people had exhausted their pleas, and still could not find a remedy to escape the law, the only thing they could do was to send "An Appeal To Heaven."

The phrase, "An Appeal To Heaven" by John Locke was memorialized on George Washington’s Revolutionary War flag (Yes, this is before Betsy Ross took up a needle and thread). The "An Appeal To Heaven" flag stood as a symbol of solidarity, conviction, and an encouragement to fight for liberty.

WCFF chose to use not one, but three of these beautiful Eastern White Pines to remind ourselves of the Trinity - and our three core values (Stand Up, Stand Together, Stand Strong). The WCFF logo also uses a modern geometric shape to remind us to be innovative while clinging to our constitutional values.
